Today’s Flex is about the NBDA P2 profitability program and why it should be important to you, the bicycle retail owner or general manager. I’m coming to you just back from two weeks on the road in both Naples Florida and Roanoke, Virginia, where we were hosting groups of our P2 profitability project retailers. 30 retailers from North America join us over the past few weeks. We filled the mornings with yoga guest speakers focus meetings peer to peer learning, afternoon daily rise and critical thinking sessions. Retailers uniting to help each other through pain points, share best practices and talk through timely topics such as E bikes, customer engagement and using data. The value of this experience cannot be stressed enough. Take a look at our NBDA Facebook page and Instagram feeds for some images captured over the past two weeks. Then go to nba.com and give your deposit to start the program in December this year. If you are ready to invest in your personal development as a bicycle retailer, join a pizza group. If you are ready to compare your key metrics with others learning from your numbers, join a pizza group. If you are ready to fine tune your business to generate more revenue. Join a pizza group. For a small investment your P2 membership dues will see your return at least two times over. It’s not an exact science but investing in yourself and furthering your education can only add to your success. I don’t want this to sound like an advertisement. But after spending these past two weeks with retailers, I saw firsthand the value, the pages and pages and pages of notes that these retailers are taking back to their stores that they can implement today. But don’t take it from me. I was recently emailing with Jeff Seltzer, General Manager of Palo Alto bicycles, who wrote me that he was involved with the P2 program from its inception. He wrote that meeting like minded retailers who were interested in proving their businesses as well as the industry had been one of the highlights of his tenure in the industry. He shared his top takeaways such as the P2 group acting as a board of directors, how often as a shop owner or general manager, the buck stops with you. There is no one to discuss the problems you’re having with staffing or business practices or other issues. But having a P2 group gives you essentially a board of directors who are there to help you succeed at any time. He went on about the numbers, taking those numbers of gross sales, payroll route labor, and comparing them to other shops to see how you’re doing gives you firsthand critical information that is super valuable at the end of the day. He then went on about the shop visits, part of the PTA program involves having other retailers in your group, come visit your store and give you firsthand information, cold, hard truth, non threatening about how you can improve. He said it was like standing in front of a crowd in your underwear. It’s terrifying and vulnerable. But it’s feedback that is able to be implemented and makes your business more profitable in the long run. He finalize the email saying that with anything in life, you get out what you put into it. It’s not a magic pill, you have to be willing to roll up your sleeves dive in and implement what your PTO group gives you. So who should join P2, P2 is perfect for independent bicycle retailers who are unsatisfied with your current profits, and you’re ready to take your bicycle retail profitability to the next level. So for retailers in their first five years of business P2 provides valuable insights to help you with planning, avoid common pitfalls and thrive during the early vulnerable years of your business. News launched yesterday from people for bikes on the partnership with call to recycle the nation’s largest most reliable battery recycling program experts to launch the first industry wide e bike battery recycling program in the United States. Great job people for bikes. The goal of this initiative is to provide a safe and reliable way to keep electric bicycle batteries a valuable resource out of landfills, bicycle retailers can enroll as collection sites and begin accepting batteries from riders starting February 2022. Focusing on this for today’s flex was a no brainer. As the importance of battery recycling is top of mind. 130 million electric bicycles are expected to be sold globally between 2020 and 2023. That’s a lot of batteries and those batteries powering those bikes will need to be safely and responsibly collected and managed at their end of life. With no current established way to get those batteries to recycler. This program was developed to keep batteries out of landfills, and works to ensure that batteries are safely handled and return to the recycling stream. Pretty cool. retailers who register as a collection site will get their location added to the map of a bit available collection points, stickers and hang tags to provide battery recycling information to your customers in store safety Materials Safety training, and us do T compliant recycling kits all with prepaid shipping. Why call to recycle. They have over 25 years of experience collecting and recycling more than 140 million pounds of batteries in the US there are leading not for profit battery logistics and recycling program and they successfully launched a similar program recently in Canada. Welcome to the Friday retailer flex the weekly pointed, digestive inspirational and actionable insights you can implement today to take your business to the next level. This is NBDA President Heather Mason. If you’re a first time listener, be sure to check out the previous episodes, please do us a favor and leave a review. Today’s message is centered around a quote and sentence we recently wrote about and an email to NBDA members. The quote bicycle retail will never be the same. It struck us are we changed? Will bicycle retail never be what it was. We had an overwhelming response to this email with retailers sharing their feedback and thoughts. One letter stood out to us as something we wanted to share. With permission from the retailer who wrote this email to us. We want to share their response and what they’re doing and their bicycle retail store to navigate the changing retail times. The letter went like this. The uncertainty has forced us to be flexible, creative, and we agree that it’s permanently changed the way we are doing business. We are rethinking everything. And we mean everything. We just ordered new hardware for our point of sale system to upgrade storage. We are finally partnering with smart detailing to get our inventory live on the website and have the option for a shopping cart program. We are integrating our current site into their platform so we can keep the look and feel of ours. With our inventory feed. We have reconfigured and re merchandise the whole store and have plans for a bigger Reno over the winter. That involves a bit more construction than we can manage. Well, it’s still so busy. We are reorganizing and cleaning all of our storage areas and clearing out old stuff that we no longer need. We have taken a hard look at our retail partners. We are thinning the herd and sticking with the companies that are profitable and reliable and have been serious about protecting IVDs we are no longer just going to carry products because they are available. We are willing to wait to sell the stuff we really love. Most importantly, we are focusing on finances to be sure we can afford bikes as they allocate in from our vendors. Instead of treating them all separately. We are looking at them as a whole and adjusting the backwaters to make sure we will have as diverse a mix of product as we can, but still make sure we are able to afford the bikes. Many companies have given up on a traditional spring dating model and are doing 30 or 60 Day dating. That doesn’t work for us in the Northeast so well. So we have to forecast that as best as possible to manage the cash flow. It all feels like a giant game of Guess what’s going to happen next. And there is no playbook from past experience for this new retail world we are entering. It is terrifying, but it’s also challenging and very exciting for us. If we can navigate this successfully, I think we will all be much more successful and strong. On the other end. A special note of things to this retailer for allowing us to share their thoughts and what they are doing in their store. Thank you for sending the email to us. We always appreciate the emails we get back. We know it’s different. It’s scary, it’s new. We want to propose to hold on to the best of bicycle retail and what it means to you in your community. Bicycle retailers have a place a strong place in the heart of a community. Bicycle retail might never be the same but bicycle retailers are still the strong passionate enthusiast adding to the journey of every current and future cyclists, helping with the changing climate bettering local trails, adding bike lanes, finding a profit and making their life’s work in the industry. And great news. While new and tough to navigate there is still success to be found great success in the bicycle industry. It might just look a little different. Welcome to the Friday retailer flex so weekly pointed, digestive, inspirational and actionable insights you can implement today to take your business to the next level. This is NBDA President Heather Mason. If you’re a first time listener, be sure to check out the previous episodes and do us a huge favor leave a review. It helps members of our industry find our podcast. Today’s flex is centered around pushing that reset button and some personal tips of mine that I want to share with you for retail success. For the past few days during my morning run, thoughts of the new consumer and the aftershock of the global pandemic has left my mind swirling. Every day I have a unique opportunity to speak email or text with multiple shops, conversations that leave my mind spinning the pieces in place. I know it’s not enough for me to communicate to you the information you need such as bike availability. But more I also want to be able to provide you with feedback that I’m hearing from other retailers and compiling to offer tips, insight and suggestions based on these conversations. So this morning, I woke up and after getting the kids to school, it all clicked what today’s flex needed to be about. In our Monday mingle, I see tension in retailers faces. The conversations with community members and shop owners have a certain feel of vulnerability. And it seems that we’re all seeking a desire for safety, protection and seriously low stress situations. Feedback shows that the retail environment is feeling the subtle effects of this as well. As humans, we typically step away from tension. But I wonder if it would help us as retailers to walk towards it, embrace it and offer solutions. We have noticed that buying trends are scattered as consumers are taking control of obtaining their wants and needs and searching for anything that makes them feel good, healthy and safe. We want to get back to the norm. We want to spend time with our family, we value our time. By some estimates, we have jumped over a growth pattern of 10 years and as little as 18 months as ecommerce sales have vaulted. What we witnessed as normal shopping will never be the same. We have all changed. loyalty is that all time vulnerability high. People want it they crave it. We want to feel good about relationships and where we spend our money, and where we put our time and energy and it is time to reconnect and reaffirm to your clients, your riders your community that you understand as a retailer what they value in need, and that you are responding with inventory adjustments and additional communication. We need to deepen our connections now more than ever, we need to make sure we are offering a safe environment and an easy experience. We need to thank our customers invite them back again. Remind them how important they are to us. We need to create experiences that we can engage with them on a more personal level. Might it be a group ride, a picnic, or moments like the NBDA Costa Rica trip we just organized memorable moments. Although it is not something on the tip of our tongue like six months ago, it is still important to make sure the state the store is a safe environment. You should still continue to post specific guidelines and deepen your cleaning protocols. Make sure your employees are aware of these guidelines. Additionally, it is more critical than ever to pay attention to keep the store frictionless, uncluttered and not crowded. It should be easy for the writer to come in and find exactly what they need. For you. It’s important to pay attention to spots where dust old parts and papers could pile up. Remember that the consumer sees everything. Stand back. Look at your shop from the entrance to the dumpster inside and out. If you need help consider even hiring a professional cleaning service or commercial property care to help you keep up. Pay attention to the windows parking areas. Finish it off with making sure your staff is either in uniform or that each member looks clean and approachable and their unique style. Every effort pays off and paints an image in the mind of the writer of the value of that you have for your business. And it reflects on the consumers thoughts of how much they trust your product recommendation. They trust your service. They assume If the shop is clean and top notch, then you must be as well. You can use technology to help the shopping convenience, many options exist to offer a frictionless buying experience for your customer. These were things we had talked about months ago and we still do. But many shops have continued forward with this technology, although it’s not required now because we are allowing people in it streamlines services and advances the level of your retail environment. Things like mobile payments in store curbside pickup, digital screen browsing. Some shops are scheduling services pickups using things like hub tiger. Some stores are scheduling a one on one shopping experience to offer personalized bike purchasing with a sales associate. These are unique opportunities to create a customer centric environment. One that is tailored one that is uniquely something that you offer. We have witnessed a surge in digital shopping and you need to embrace this, make sure your website information is clear and distinct. Consumers searching should easily find you online work with outlets such as locally pointee, and other local listings to help with SEO. Having a website that is fast and easy to navigate with clear product descriptions and detailed images is critical. use social media to further enhance your online success. Use your customer data to connect with segment emails and use SMS when appropriate. These are new norms and expectations of our riders and truly create a customer centric experience. If you read my emails, or tune in weekly to our podcasts, I tilt many of my messages towards connecting with the customer, the in store experience and supporting online shopping encounters. At the retail level, these three things are what I would consider the essence of what we offer. Why would a consumer choose you with all the options available. Regardless if I am purchasing something in store, online or over the phone, one thing always happens. It’s human connection. At some point, I am connected to a person an item and experience. And at some time during that connection. I had a moment where I felt like this was it. This person, this website, this phone call convinced me made me comfortable. And I was ready to choose this to add to my life story. I will consider the most amazing part of why you choose to open your store is how you get to play a role in us. You retailer, you are the connection. You get to be that store. That person that brand or website that makes everything click, you get to change someone’s life with a new bike. You and your staff get to be a part of their new bike story, or even play a role in selecting a child’s first bike, your shop, your brand, your IBV that’s huge. So today, reset, reboot cleanup and press on the MBTA is totally on your side.
