Project 529 Teams Up with Hubtiger to Combat Bike Theft Globally

Project 529, a leader in bike registry and recovery, has joined forces with Hubtiger, renowned for its cloud-based repair and rental software, to strengthen the fight against bike theft. By combining Project 529’s bicycle registry platform, 529 Garage, with Hubtiger’s network of hundreds of bike shops worldwide, the collaboration aims to significantly reduce bike theft and offer greater protection for cyclists globally.

With bike theft affecting an estimated 2 million bikes annually in North America alone, the issue has escalated beyond financial loss. Many stolen bikes are used in further criminal activities, and the booming black market for bicycles, valued at billions of dollars, has shaken the trust of the cycling community.

Impact on Global Bike Theft

Bike theft continues to be one of the top reasons people stop cycling, with many riders hesitant to invest in expensive bikes due to the threat of theft. “Bike theft is the number two or three reason that people stop riding,” said Lara Ferroni, CEO and Co-Founder of Project 529. “They just don’t feel confident in spending, and bikes can be so expensive these days.”

The partnership between Project 529 and Hubtiger is designed to restore that confidence by making it easier to identify and recover stolen bikes. “All bikes need to be serviced, and therefore, all bikes will go through a bike shop at one stage,” explained Blyth. “Stolen bikes will eventually be picked up.”

Through this collaboration, bike shops can instantly check a bike’s status, whether it is stolen, registered, or unregistered, helping to break the cycle of stolen bikes circulating undetected.

Ferroni highlighted the significance of the partnership in connecting key stakeholders in the fight against theft. “The tool really is aimed at connecting a bunch of those dots… If you’re trying to buy a bike, you can check to see if it was reported stolen,” she said, underscoring how this partnership will prevent stolen bikes from re-entering the market.

Protecting Cyclists with Smarter Solutions

Project 529 and Hubtiger’s collaboration showcases the power of a united cycling community in the fight against bike theft. With a shared commitment to bike security, the partners are building a network that empowers cyclists to protect their bikes and support each other. “The more bikes that are registered, the more proactive authorities can be, and it just becomes an upward cycle,” said Ferroni, underscoring the positive impact of increased bike registrations.

As 529 Garage leads the charge, the cycling community is invited to join the fight by embracing three key practices: Lock, Register, and Report. Cyclists can play a vital role in protecting each other. Using a high-quality U-lock, registering bikes with the free 529 Garage app, and reporting suspicious activity or theft to local authorities are all simple actions that empower riders to make a real difference and strengthen the community’s resilience against theft.

With more bikes registered through Project 529’s platform, authorities gain greater capability to track and recover stolen bikes, fostering stronger trust within the cycling community. This growing network not only deters theft but also unites cyclists, bike shops, and law enforcement in a shared mission to safeguard the cycling community.

Securing the Future of Cycling

Looking forward, Project 529 and Hubtiger are dedicated to expanding bike registration, particularly at service points and during sales, to protect even more bikes worldwide. With an estimated value of 1.1 billion USD in registered bikes in the 529 Garage database, the scale of commitment from the cycling community is clear and continues to grow. Future partnerships with police and insurance companies aim to amplify this impact, building a global network against bike theft.

Together, Project 529 and Hubtiger are setting the stage for a future where innovative technology drives meaningful change, making bike theft less of a deterrent to cycling. By leveraging their respective strengths, this partnership is creating safer cities, campuses, and communities and strengthening the cycling community one registered bike at a time.

About Project 529 Garage:

Project 529 was founded in 2013 with a mission to create a sustainable solution to reduce bike theft, promote cycling, and make cities and campuses safer for cyclists. The result is 529 Garage, a global bike registration network. Project 529 brings together cyclists, shops, police, and communities by providing the tools needed to better organise against bike theft.

The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) is excited to announce the launch of an NBDA-endorsed Consumer Financing Program, designed to offer members in the United States and Canada access to flexible, low-cost financing solutions for their customers. With rates negotiated by the NBDA to reduce retailer costs, this new member benefit provides a valuable tool to help bicycle retailers increase sales, boost average transaction values, and improve close rates.

For U.S. Retailers: Financing Powered by PayPossible, Citi and Uown Leasing

Through a partnership with PayPossible, Citi and Uown Leasing, U.S. retailers can now easily integrate consumer financing into their point-of-sale systems, offering customers flexible 3, 6, and 12-month no-interest plans. With financing fees starting at just 2.5%, this program offers a cost-effective option that makes financing accessible and attractive to both retailers and customers. Participating retailers will receive point-of-purchase materials to help promote these offers in-store.

In today’s challenging economic environment, flexible financing options are essential for empowering consumers with choices that meet their unique financial needs.”

For Canadian Retailers: Financing Powered by Fairstone

The NBDA has teamed up with Fairstone to provide a specialized financing solution for Canadian retailers. Fairstone, a highly regulated lender, ensures responsible lending practices and minimizes the impact of prime rate increases. With financing fees as low as 3.24% and simple integration with point-of-sale systems, Fairstone offers Canadian retailers flexible payment options, including 3, 6, and 12-month no-interest plans, that help attract new customers and increase sales.

NBDA Member Call Out: Ryder Bikes

Paul Tobio
Ryder Bikes, Owner

Paul’s bike shop history started when he was 13 as a young BMXer in Massachusetts.  He would make his way into Belmont Wheelworks every day looking for something new for his bike.  After a few weeks, they gave him a broom and asked if he wanted a job, probably expecting him to stop pestering them every day.

Career Growth

After graduating from college, Paul went to work for Staples and spent 17 years in various roles including Store Design, Finance, Shortage Control, Store Operations, Inventory Management, and Vendor Relations and Supply Chain.  Paul purchased Ryder Bikes, in Bradenton, Fl in the spring of 2007, which was founded by Bruce Ryder in 1972.

Business Growth

Paul took Ryder Bikes from one store up to three stores by 2013.  He then closed the smallest store in 2016 to focus on the two larger stores.  In November of 2019, he sold the building that one store was in to a property management company.  When Covid hit in 2020, he focused on the single store and drove the sales to 2.5 times pre-Covid levels.

Paul loves the day-to-day operations and also the numbers behind the business.  One of the most thrilling aspects of his business is building a strong store team and supporting the local cycling community.  Paul has been part of the NBDA P2 program for a little over a year, which has created a peer team that is supportive and holds each other accountable.  Paul feels that the NBDA P2 program has provided a great opportunity to drill into the numbers and yourself accountable.

Paul also loves discussing the industry as a whole and spends a few hours every week talking with his reps – inside and outside, company and independent – to get a feel for the pulse of our industry.  Paul also sits on the Best Practices Committee that the NBDA established last year.

Future Growth

Paul joined the NBDA Board of Directors this past fall and he is looking forward to assisting in steering the NBDA into the future.  He sees many opportunities to help retailers and suppliers bridge communication gaps and drive our industry toward profitability and longevity.

Paul is excited about the CABDA West show in March, to meet many suppliers and retailers at an industry specific event that we have been missing for a number of years.  Additionally, the NBDA Retailer Summit the day prior to CABDA West will provide various educational opportunities for retailers that have been missing for years.

Ryder Bikes has been supporting the cycling community in the Sarasota / Bradenton area for over 50 years.  They have been supportive of the new and seasoned cyclist, by making everyone feel welcome in their shop.  Customer service and selection are at the center of everything the shop does.

Feel free to reach out to Paul – Paul Tobio | LinkedIn or Paul@RyderBikes.com

What are Microplastics? Why are They Bad For You?

Article provided by Keaton Smith from Bivo

I had known that plastic wasn’t great for you for a while. I tried not to microwave my food in plastic, opted for my wooden reusable utensil set over a disposable fork, and avoided disposable plastic bottles.

The team from Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean conducting microplastic research in the Hudson River to both understand and prevent the problem.

The team from Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean conducting microplastic research in the Hudson River to both understand and prevent the problem.

But I was fuzzy on the details. Wait, what is plastic supposed to do to me again? What exactly is bad about it? How big of a deal is this issue?

A few months ago, we started seeing more and more news articles about micro and nanoplastics, prompted by the release of a big study from Columbia University. This study found some scary stats about the sheer number of nanoplastics in plastic water bottles.

To make sure I was fully up to speed on the science of plastic, I sought out an expert to answer some of the most common questions we see about micro and nanoplastics.

For today’s post, I interviewed Rachael Z. Miller. Rachael is a National Geographic Explorer and the founder of the Rozalia Project, a non-profit that tackles the problem of marine debris–which includes waste like old fishing gear, consumer debris and microplastic and microfiber pollution. They conduct research from a 60ft sailing research vessel and use underwater robots to pick up samples from the ocean floor.

What are microplastics? What’s the difference between microplastics and nanoplastics?

Microplastics are plastic particles that measure between 5mm (half the size of your pinkie nail) and 1 micron. They include pieces intentionally manufactured at a small scale (like face glitter) as well as pieces that are fragments of larger plastic items.

Synthetic microfibers are included in the umbrella of microplastics. Microfibers, in general, are tiny fibers that have broken off of longer fibers. While these microfibers can be non-synthetic (natural), many are synthetic (made from plastic) and most are treated with chemicals (think: fabric softener and dye-setting agents) that would be harmful to humans and the environment.

Nanoplastics are even smaller. One micron and smaller. (For reference, 70 microns is about the width of a strand of hair, so nanoplastics are way smaller than that).

Scientists are only just starting to publish studies on nanoplastics so the research is limited- mostly because the technology available to study something this small is so new that it isn’t widely used yet.

How prevalent are micro and nanoplastics in the environment?

A blue polyester fiber found in the Hudson River.

A blue polyester fiber found in the Hudson River.

Unfortunately, they are everywhere. In the ocean, on the hiking trails, in the dust in your house. They’re even in remote parts of the world. Rachael and her team found microplastics, mostly microfibers, in the Southern Ocean, the Falkland Islands, and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Why is this bad?

Plastics are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they wreck or mess with reproductive systems. Additives associated with plastic manufacturing can also cause harm to living creatures. While the majority of studies from the last 15 years have been focused on establishing myriad harms that microplastics can cause to creatures in and around the water, it has only been over the last few years that studies to understand the implications for humans have surfaced.

Recent studies published in March 2024 (here and here) have established correlations (not causations, but still enough to give us a scare) between the presence of microplastic in various parts of the human body, including everything from behavior change to disrupted gut biome, reduced fertility and even heart attack, stroke and death.

While to date, there’s no ‘patient zero’ that establishes a causal link between microplastics and a particular issue, for Rachael, at least, the evidence to reduce exposure to plastic is extremely compelling.

How to reduce your own exposure to microplastics

Finally, there are many steps we can take in our own lives to reduce our own exposure to microplastics. While the issue may be more on a systemic level, here are some tips to think about moving forward:

  1. Use less plastic in your daily life
  2. Avoid drinking and eating directly from plastic
  3. Avoid buying food wrapped in plastic
  4. Educate yourself and help out your community (Rozalia Project has some great programs, for example)

How to reduce microparticle shedding

To help slow the spread of microplastics, there are lots of small things we can do.

A bundle of microfiber filtered from a load of winter laundry done in a top-loading washing machine.

A bundle of microfiber filtered from a load of winter laundry done in a top-loading washing machine.

One way that microplastics and microfibers enter the waterway is via washing machines. Microfibers shed off of the clothing being washed and exit the machine along with the water, entering the local waterway and making its way to the ocean. Rachael shared some tips on reducing this shedding:

  1. Wash clothes in cold water
  2. Only wash clothes that are dirty
  3. Always do loads that are 3/4 full
  4. Use this laundry ball to trap microfibers

While most wastewater treatment plants are able to stop the vast majority of the fibers that arrive in the influent, it is likely that fibers like these can still end up on our public waterways as part of fertilizer.

A better solution is to prevent this from happening in the first place with more resilient clothing, better washing settings and techniques and through the use of in-drum, in-line or external filtering devices.

Another way that microfibers shed is just when we wear our clothing. Rachael suggests strategizing around what we’re wearing:

  • Try wearing high-shedding clothes (think: wooly/ fleece layers) as base layers and low-shedding clothes (like a hard shell) as top layers.
  • Buy high-quality clothing and take good care of it
  • Ask your favorite outdoor clothing brands to improve the quality of what they offer. Tell them you want and will buy from them: low-shed technical gear made out of something that’s bio-derived (made from natural materials) and bio-benign (won’t harm the environment).

NTA 8776 vs. CPSC: Why Your Helmet’s Safety Standard Matters

When it comes to helmets, safety isn’t something you should compromise on. Yet, many people still wear helmets that are certified by outdated standards. This raises the critical question: Why are people still choosing CPSC-certified helmets when NTA 8776 exists?

What is the CPSC Standard?

The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) standard was introduced back in the 1980s when bicycles typically didn’t exceed 15 mph (24 km/h). CPSC helmets are designed to provide protection for pedal-powered bike riders, but with the rise of e-bikes, this standard is increasingly inadequate.  The agency acknowledges that they are overdue to release new standards but are strapped by delays, bureaucracy, and lack of urgency, especially as standards like NTA 8776 are being relied upon more and more.

Many well-known brands continue to produce helmets that only meet the CPSC standard. Popular brands include:

While these helmets are great for traditional cycling, their effectiveness at protecting riders at higher speeds—like those common with electric bikes and scooters—is questionable.

What is NTA 8776?

In response to the limitations of CPSC, the NTA 8776 standard was developed in 2016. This newer certification is specifically designed for e-bikes, e-scooters, and other micromobility devices that can reach speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h).

Helmets certified to the NTA 8776 standard provide more extensive coverage, especially at the back and sides of the head, where impacts are more likely at higher speeds. NTA helmets offer extra layers of protection for riders engaging in faster activities.

Brands that manufacture helmets certified to the NTA 8776 standard include:

Why Are Manufacturers Still Producing CPSC Helmets?

The main reason why many manufacturers still produce CPSC helmets boils down to cost. Helmets certified to NTA 8776 standards require more robust materials and more extensive testing, which drives up production costs. Many helmet companies prefer to save money by continuing to produce CPSC-certified helmets despite knowing these helmets are less effective for faster rides on e-bikes and scooters.

But that’s where the problem lies: Why are people still wearing helmets certified for speeds up to 15 mph in a world where electric bikes regularly travel at speeds of 20-28 mph?

The Call to Action: Choose Safer, Smarter

There’s no reason to settle for less when there’s a superior safety standard available. As consumers, it’s time to demand more from helmet manufacturers. And manufacturers? It’s time to stop cutting corners and start prioritizing the safety of riders.

The difference is clear: CPSC helmets are outdated relics from a time when cycling was much slower. NTA 8776 is the modern standard designed to protect the growing number of people riding electric bikes at high speeds.

So, why would anyone choose a less safe alternative?

Comparison: NTA 8776 vs. CPSC

Feature NTA 8776 CPSC
Certification Year 2016 1980s
Speed Coverage Up to 28 mph (45 km/h) Up to 15 mph (24 km/h)
Intended Use E-bikes, e-scooters, micro mobility Traditional pedal bicycles
Impact Protection Higher-speed impacts and rear coverage Low-speed impacts, less rear protection
Cost to Manufacture Higher due to stringent standards Lower cost for manufacturers

The Final Word: NTA 8776 Is the Future

With the rise of e-bikes and scooters, CPSC helmets are simply not designed for the faster, modern world we live in. NTA 8776 helmets offer the protection riders need to stay safe on today’s roads.

As riders, it’s time to hold manufacturers accountable. Choose helmets with NTA 8776 certification—your safety should be worth the extra protection. And for manufacturers still producing CPSC helmets? The message is clear: It’s time to invest and upgrade.
