The clear standout from the survey was the Bosch E-bike system, which received top rankings across multiple categories. Bosch has been at the forefront of innovation in E-bike drive systems for over a decade, offering top performance, quality, and digital services that shape the future of E-bike mobility.

While Bosch emerged as the frontrunner, other notable system standouts included Shimano, Specialized Turbo, Giant Sync Drive, and Bafang.

A detailed analysis of the survey revealed several key insights:

  • Bosch emerged as the clear favorite in overall quality, receiving five times more votes than other popular brands such as Shimano and Specialized Turbo.

  • Bosch also led in terms of satisfaction, with Shimano following closely behind.

  • Top performers in technical training included Bosch, Shimano, and Bafang.

  • Consumer brand reputation favored Bosch, Giant Sync Drive, Specialized Turbo, Fazua, and Shimano.

  • Service and warranty support were highly rated for Bosch, Shimano, Specialized Turbo, and Giant Sync Drive.

Additionally, comments from retailers emphasized the importance of warranty, support, and training provided by E-bike system suppliers, highlighting the central role of the Independent Bicycle Dealer (IBD) in the customer experience.

Irvine, CA, April 16th, 2024 – The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) is taking proactive steps to advocate for the safety of cyclists by announcing it will submit comments to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on behalf of retailers across North America. The CPSC is currently considering the development of new rules to address the risk of injury associated with electric bicycles (e-bikes), marking a pivotal moment for the cycling industry.

In response to the CPSC’s call for comments, the NBDA has extracted six questions from those posted by the CPSC, specifically tailored to solicit insights from retailers. These questions have been crafted into a survey in which the NBDA is urging retailers to comment on. The responses received will be included in the NBDA’s submission to the CPSC, reflecting the collective feedback and opinions of retailers at large.

Heather Mason, President of the NBDA, emphasized the significance of retailers’ input in shaping future legislation. “This is a fantastic moment for us to provide comments inclusive of our membership base. The e-bike category is so important to our business. We want to ensure all retailers have a voice in future regulations legislation,” said Mason.

The advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR), posted on March 15, 2024, signals the initiation of a rulemaking proceeding under the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) and the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA). The CPSC is seeking input on various aspects of e-bike safety, including mechanical hazards, regulatory alternatives, economic impacts, existing voluntary standards, and plans for new standards development.

The NBDA will collaborate with Human Powered Solutions to craft a comprehensive and well-rounded comment that addresses retailers’ perspectives on e-bike safety regulations. The commenting period opened on March 14, 2024, and will remain open until May 15, allowing ample time for stakeholders to provide input.

While the CPSC focuses on regulating the mechanical aspects of e-bikes, separate considerations are being made regarding lithium-ion battery safety. Recent studies have underscored the importance of addressing mechanical issues to mitigate the risk of injuries and fatalities associated with e-bikes.

The NBDA remains committed to championing the interests of bicycle retailers and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of cyclists across North America.

Irvine, CA, April 2, 2024 – The National Bicycle Dealership Association (NBDA) is pleased to announce that nearly nearly 100 retailers, representing 150 locations around North America, are working on a number of business-strengthening activities to earn this year’s coveted NBDA Retailer Excellence Award.

This year’s program is designed to reward retailers for doing the hard work of meeting current challenging industry conditions and turning them into opportunities for growth and excellence. Participants work with the NBDA over a period of three months to develop more communications with customers and employees, analyze (and improve) key performance indicators (KPIs) affecting their bottom line, and gather feedback from the community about their physical and online presence.

“Our goal is to strengthen retailers’ overall business performance by offering tools to ‘battle’ today’s market and teaching them how to add them to the routine of their strategic planning and operations,” said Jodi Hall, NBDA program operations.

Virtual meetings have united this group of dedicated retail owners and managers and allowed the sharing of ideas on key business questions such as how to increase gross margin, inspire bigger transactions, and squeeze more profit out of the service department.

After one of the meetings, Vivee, owner of Westside Joe’s Bike Shop in Alameda, California said, “Lots running around in my brain after watching the awesome video from yesterday! I put some of it to work today!! Thanks so much for having this program! I am so grateful! And it’s so inspiring!”

Program participants earn points by attending virtual meetings intended to be the catalyst for networking and the sharing of best practices, digging into specific KPIs to show their growth from 2023, and formulating news-making initiatives and events.

“I am so inspired by our retailers who are doing the hard work of looking inward at the volume and quality of sales, and come together with us and share ideas to help this amazing community of retailers that we have around the country,” said Heather Mason, president of the NBDA.

Starting April 1, retailers can (optionally) ask their communities to “vote” for them, with one comment about why they appreciate their shop. Three retailers in each of five categories with the most responses will win the NBDA People’s Choice Award.

“We have been a part of the Retailer Excellence Award since it began, and each year comes with learning lessons on how to improve and keep our team sharp and ready to be the best we can for all our customers and local community to earn those titles!” said Patrick Scanga, owner of Bicycle X-Change in Wichita, Kansas. “This year’s goal to achieve top honors has been a more enjoyable process and great opportunity to pick up more tricks and tips from other best-in-class bicycle shops all over the USA.”

Winners of the coveted Retailers Excellence Award will be announced at the NBDA Retailer Summit. The Summit, taking place in Bentonville, Arkansas on May 22-23, 2024, is a pivotal event offering retailers access to industry experts and informative sessions with peer groups, and suppliers as well. The NBDA Retailer Summit will empower retailers with best practices and more tools to navigate challenges, stay abreast of industry trends, and optimize their businesses for success.

With influence from the pandemic and amplified by the shopping habits of tomorrow’s generations, a vast majority of sales begin their journey online. Success in the incredibly competitive specialty bicycle retail market requires dealers to adopt and incorporate a comprehensive digital marketing strategy that is tailored to meet their unique needs. For smaller family-run dealers, it can feel overwhelming leaving behind pen-and-paper transactions. For larger outlets that house classes, work orders/repairs and additional services under one roof, they may already be set in their ways, but are feeling the need to be more competitive against big box merchants. But the universal constant for both of these businesses is that embracing technology and adapting to tomorrow’s ever-evolving market is key in guaranteeing their future success.

In this session, we will focus on how drastically the bicycle industry and consumer shopping patterns are changing, why it is critical for dealers to adopt a digital strategy and what specifically will help dealers enhance their business operations. Step by step, we will walk through a multitude of solutions that dealers can use to enhance their online strategy.

Topics including:

1. Growing your digital strategy and leveraging modern marketing trends, one step at a time
2. Tips and best practices to ensure your website ranks in the top Google results
3. Differentiating your content marketing and website copy/product descriptions (even when pulling standard data from distributor product feeds)
4. Building your social engagement, online community and brand image
5. Revolutionizing how you send emails to your customers, resulting in 6x more success

Regardless of which software platform you are currently using, the goal of this session is for you to walk away with tips and tricks to bring back to your business to be more competitive in the rapidly changing digital landscape.
